“ARROW” IS BACK! (PUT THAT IN YOUR PULL QUOTES CW!)

After a crappy episode last week in which we were force fed a bunch of shitty details that got way too tedious, Episode 3 “Lone Gunman” returns the series to the elite status it had after the awesome Episode 1 “Pilot.”

Vidar is starting to buy in the complexity.

Each week, a new level of depth is added which helps to enhance the fairly basic plotting (which appears to be on auto-repeat).

  1. Bad rich guy does bad things to good people.
  2. Bad rich guy is on “Arrow”/Oliver Queen’s list of bad guys to eliminate (that he got from his dad, Robert Queen).
  3. “Arrow”/Oliver works out (a different apparatus each week), goes to clubs, figures out how to get bad guy (on a super-duper CIA-In-A-Box software program that he must have got from Fry’s).
  4. “Arrow”/Oliver gets the bad guy and over the course of the week gets closer to his sister, Thea, and former girlfriend, Laurel Lance, while other acquaintances either get closer or plot some type of betrayal.

But now – there is more. NOW “ARROW” IS FREAKING HAMLET!

Vidar is skeptical that the creators can pull this off. That’s a mighty tall order.

“Arrow”/Oliver does have quite a few traits in common with Hamlet:

  1. He is fairly melancholy.
  2. He parties on a superficial level and broods when he is alone.
  3. His dad was killed and his friend (Walter Steele) quickly marries “Arrow”/Oliver’s mom, Moira. (Slight difference in Hamlet. Hamlet’s dad was killed by his brother, Claudius, who then married his brother’s wife, Gertrude). There is still no proof that Walter Steele had anything to do with Robert Queen’s death – but it sure seems likely now that it will at least be explored Hamlet-style. (Personally, Vidar doesn’t believe “Arrow”/Oliver’s dad, Robert Queen, is dead).
  4. And in this episode, “Lone Gunman” he shot with a poison bullet (Hamlet died from a sword tip that was anointed with poison).

There are way too many things that are different.

Who is Ophelia?

Not “Arrow”/Oliver’s sister Thea. Hamlet was an only child. Ophelia could be Laurel Lance which would make her dad, Detective Lance, Polonius? He’s not that much of a buffoon. But Polonius certainly never trusted Hamlet and, yes, gets killed by Hamlet. (Is that a possible Week 22 cliff-hanger spoiler?)

And is his friend, Tommy Merlyn, supposed to be Horatio? If so, that means Horatio has been sleeping with Ophelia while they thought Hamlet was dead. No one would give a shit about the “Flights of Angels” crap at the end if that were true.

But here is a prediction: We will see the “Ghost” of “Arrow”/Oliver’s dad appear Hamlet-style and he will probably tell “Arrow”/Oliver to avenge his death.

(Which really flies in the face of my belief that Robert Queen is still alive. But the “Ghost” of Robert Queen still could appear in some sort of dream. “Arrow”/Oliver has a lot of dreams.)

SOME BASIC THOUGHTS ABOUT EPISODE 3

  1. So the first “Green Arrow” is a Japanese guy with miracle herbs to take poison out of your system and make you recover from whatever it is that ails you? Fine. Vidar can suspend disbelief as much as the next Norse God. But what happens when he runs out of these herbs. Perhaps he has learned to make it, MacGyver-style out of everyday household products. Or there will be yet another cool thing in that magic bow and arrow bag that he brought back from the island.
  2. There are armed soldiers on the island as well with black boots, pants, belts and guns. Are these Russians – which could explain how he can speak Russian and has that wacky tattoo? Vidar says yes. Russia is close to Japan. They fought over tons of those little islands over there. Plausible enough.
  3. So Laurel Lance can kick ass. She must have signed up for the “Best Self-Defense Class Ever” that was advertised in the back of the Penny Saver. Fine.
  4. For the second week in a row, “Arrow”/Oliver freaking loses in a hand-to-hand fight. Impossible based on “Arrow”/Oliver’s work out routine. That club owner thug was totally fat. But, at least we learned that Laurel Lance will be able to help out down the line when things get really hairy.
  5. “Arrow”/Oliver’s security guard (John Diggle) has a way hot sister-in-law whose diseased husband apparently died while he was “Arrow”/Oliver’s previous bodyguard? (God, these details are so freaking annoying.The more I write about this episode, the less of a rave it is!) The point of this mention is that John Diggle’s sister-in-law is way hot. That’s all.
  6. Strange coincidence: The IT Girl (Felicity Smoak) that “Arrow”/Oliver went to looks exactly like the IT girl that Vidar goes to. Dead on. Vidar would have walked away if she didn’t have on glasses. Without the glasses, she wouldn’t have been smart enough to handle my computer issues.
  7. So, now “Arrow”/Oliver has the Russian mafia and a blonde IT Girl to go to for hard to get information that he can’t get from his CIA-On-Your-Desktop software program that he must have bought at Fry’s. Plus the IT Girl knows all about “Hamlet” (and probably a few other classics) and can guide the audience along on how things are progressing from that parallel story line.
  8. Now John Diggle knows that Oliver IS “Arrow” – so he can either help or hurt his cause. Bet the farm on help.

    Great episode. That Hamlet part went right over my head. Sounds smart though. I think that they could spend just a little more time on the island part. I would rather have the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes of the show be on the island (much like USA shows White Collar/Burn Notice). It was interesting to see Deadshot but I can understand that they wouldn’t want anything distracting from the main idea of him avenging his Father and righting his families wrongs. Not sure if the writers were having a little fun or if they are going to continuosly introduce these super villians into the storyline. Digg is going to be Arrows grounding force. I don’t think they are going to work together but Digg will ensure that Arrow is les vigilantly and more avenger. It will be interesting to see how Digg and Olivers relationship grows over the next few episodes. The show is doing a great job expanding on individual characters (much like smallville). This show could do well on any network!

    Deadshot wouldn’t have died, nor do you even see him die. He was shot in the eye. If Batman cannot kill him then Green Arrow cannot either, he just loses an eye.

    Great review; it’s always good to read of another’s perspective even if it’s beyond anything I could think of myself! I’ve been wondering if Oliver’s dad is really dead, but a gunshot to the brain is a little hard to comeback from. Plus, Oliver buried him, so I imagine that the writers would have a lot of explaining to do if they did bring him back from the dead. I didn’t think I would like this show, but when one of my co-workers from DISH promised me that I would like it I decided it wouldn’t hurt to set a timer on my Hopper to record the new episodes. Even though there are several other shows that air at the same time that I like watching, I’ve haven’t missed an episode since I can record up to six different things during primetime, including all the primetime shows from the four major networks. Each episode of Arrow has definitely been fast-paced and it still has some growing to do story wise. The only thing that bothers me about the show is Oliver’s constant narration.

      Oliver buried a body. There was that other dude in the boat with them. He could have buried him. The dad looked like the bullet blew him out of the boat and into the water. So that could have been a fake bullet. It’s all crazy – but, Dude, it’s all based on a comic book. Anything is plausible.
