Manka Bros., Khan Manka, Lauren Conrad, The Fame Game, Glamour, Jonathan Franzen, Charlotte Bronte, jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, John Irving, The Hunger Games, Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Whitney Port, The Hills, 1000 books you must read in your lifetime, Jackie Collins, Dostoyevsky, The GuardianOK – let’s say you’re 30 years old.

Let’s say the average American reads three books a year (outside the U.S. the average may be a bit higher).

Let’s say you have a good fifty years of reading before you die.

That’s 150 books.

[Fun fact: The average American will watch 72,800 hours of television in that same time period.]

Is “The Fame Game” by Lauren fucking Conrad going to be one of those 150 books?

Let’s assume you’ve already “Crime and Punishment,” “Pride & Prejudice,” and the complete works of William Shakespeare and don’t know what to read next and you’re at the check-out counter at Ralph’s and  there’s Lauren Conrad smiling at you naked from Glamour magazine asking you to read her book.

Resist!

You’ve still got over 129 million books to choose from – do a little exploring!

Are you seriously going to read “The Fame Game” when there are a couple of Hemingways, Brontes and Woolfs you haven’t gotten to?

It’s time to up your “Summer Read” game and resist the temptation of shitty celebrity writing!

Manka Bros., Khan Manka, Lauren Conrad, The Fame Game, Glamour, Jonathan Franzen, Charlotte Bronte, jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, John Irving, The Hunger Games, Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Whitney Port, The Hills, 1000 books you must read in your lifetime, Jackie Collins, Dostoyevsky, The Guardian“A Prayer For Owen Meany” is a fairly awesome book.

Read that one instead.

Or any one of these:   1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read.

And if you simply can’t stay away from the trashy celebrity novel – go for Jackie Collins (I can’t believe I wrote that) and leave Lauren Conrad in her reality show world where she belongs.

I warn you, if “The Fame Game” is a best seller, Audrina is going to write a book next.

In 2010, when the Tea Party won quite a few House seats and a couple of Senate seats , many people were wrongly tricked into believing that a serious political movement had begun and a rise of the Far Right was imminent.

(Frankly, I believe these were ‘protest candidate’ candidates that were elected mostly because the country was at the height of the Great Recession and there was a lot of misery and demand for change out there.)

Well, the call for change is coming to an end, the country is on the mend and the Republicans that want to keep their jobs are drifting back to the center.

And if they don’t drift to the center they will, most likely, be voted out of office because the wacko Right is no longer a viable alternative.

And, I believe, much of this rejection of change is because of a Sean Hannity EPIC FAIL.

It turns out, the majority of Americans do not want to live in Sean Hannity’s world.

His is a world of constant conflict for the sake of ratings.  A world of hammering a message over and over and over again turning his audience into something similar to school children in North Korea.

And it’s a message that never wavers:  “Anyone but Obama…” (The Republican pundit establishment has apparently changed that slightly – “Anyone but Obama or Romney…”)

Well, because of this message – and the millions who follow Mr. Hannity – the Republicans may well be stuck with Rick ‘The Stick’ Santorum (just as they nearly got stuck with Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry).

I can now confirm, with 0% of the vote counted, Rick Santorum has LOST the 2012 general election to President Obama.

There is no question Santorum has already lost without one vote being counted.  Bob Dole’s loss to Bill Clinton in 1996 will be considered a close race compared to an Obama vs. Santorum election.

Santorum will, most likely, get the lowest number of female votes in the history of Presidential elections (unless you count the Presidential races in which women did not have the right to vote).

However, Santorum will, most likely, win the Fascist vote as he is the candidate with the most images on the internet with a Hitler mustache Photoshopped onto his face.

Now, what’s crazy about all this is I firmly believe Sean Hannity, deep down, doesn’t care how people live their lives.   I firmly believe that if the ratings dictated a different point of view, Mr. Hannity would shift on a dime to the Left and still claim that his moral compass has never wavered.

He would refute this claim vehemently.  And, to be fair, he has never had to face that problem because there are millions of Americans that he has focused on that love the bomb throwing, the red meat and any other political metaphor you can think of.

It is obvious we are living in a crazy time when Ann Coulter is the voice of reason at CPAC.  Say what you want about her, she is not a stupid person.  She knows there is only one candidate that has a slight chance against President Obama and that is Mitt Romney.

Why the Republican establishment hasn’t thrown everything behind Mitt is beyond me.  Perhaps it’s because there is also a feeling Mitt Romney cannot win either.  (I am one of those people.)

But he’s really the only choice there is to even get close to the lofty John McCain numbers of 2008.

Of course, Sean Hannity (and Rush and all the others) could swing things by full on endorsing Mr. Romney.  But if he did, he would lose half his audience and his street cred as a bomb throwing ‘lover of freedom’ (though most people would consider ‘love’ and ‘freedom’ two things that are lacking in his political philosophy).

Mr. Hannity really doesn’t care who is President.  It is probably more fun for him to criticize President Obama than it was to defend President Bush.  And it certainly won’t be fun for him to have to defend President Santorum (who, remember, has 0% chance to win).

Like I said – it’s completely fine with me.  The implosion of the Grand Old Party is actually quite amusing.

God speed, Sean Hannity – you are President Obama’s best friend these days.

Yes, I’m the one.

Just kidding.  There were actually quite a few people who watched last night.  But 23% fewer than watched last year.

This show is dead.

It may limp along and have an occasional really good ratings night – but it’s all over.  We all know it.

A couple of years ago, I said the show was dead as soon as Simon Cowell announced he was leaving.

I suppose I was wrong only because the show did continue – and actually had some nice moments last year – but creatively it was dead.

Last night, it was painful to watch Randy Jackson try to be the “tough” Simon-type judge.  He just doesn’t have the verbal chops to pull it off.

“It was awful.”  “That was really bad, dude.”  “Just terrible.”

And you could see him trying to be the one with authority because Jennifer Lopez is too nice (but seems to be the only one trying to be constructive) and Steven Tyler too clueless to take on that role (though I actually like Steven Tyler and think he would have been a great addition instead of Kara DioGuardi in the year they thought they needed four judges).

Simon is desperately needed for this show to work.  And, what’s really crazy is he DOESN’T work on his own show.  I think “The X Factor” is terrible – just awful, dude (to quote Randy).

So Simon leaving “American Idol” basically made two shows suck.

  • We had Tent Girl (Amy Brumfield) – who was basically Crystal Bowersox – (hopefully she can stay out of jail)
  • We had Phillip Phillips – who is David Cook (among many others)
  • We had a teenage Michael Jackson (who annoyingly fancies himself a lady’s man)
  • We had some awkward Lee DeWyzes (more awkward than Lee DeWyze)
  • We had a few Daughtrys
  • We had some hot chicks who could barely carry a tune but made it through to Hollywood (because it’s a singing competition – you HAVE to have good looking people on the show)
  • We had numerous Jennifer Hudsons
  • We had a lot of country music types (can country music absorb another failed pop star?)

It’s just enough with these singing talent shows.  The ratings drop-off year-over-year should be proving that America is getting tired of it and Hollywood is refusing to offer us something new.

But I understand how hard it is for Fox to give it up.  It’s produced at a minimum cost (relative) and still gets double the ratings of any new scripted show they launch – so why not keep it going no matter how lame?

But that doesn’t mean I have to like it… or watch it.

These are the very same banks that were recently slobbering all over LinkedIn and would most likely kill anyone who tries to stop them from getting in on the Facebook IPO.

What am I missing here?

AMC Networks (AMC, IFC, WE, Sundance) represents highly-regarded premium television content (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Killing, Walking Dead, etc.) – the kind of content Hollywood needs people to watch.  The kind of content only Hollywood can make.  And the kind of content people really love.

Sounds likes a win win win.  And a buy buy buy.

If Wall Street shrugs at a pure-play cable network spin-off like AMC Networks, what does that say about the future of old-school big media?  Being an employee of old-school big media, I’m not sure I like what that says.

Should they adapt to the changing (but unproven) business models and stop distributing quality content – focusing instead on selling little digital versions of Don Draper for $1?  Or should they continue to do what they best until they simply disappear because their audiences die of old age?

Personally, I blame the whole VC/Y Combinator mentally for creating this unearned enthusiasm for certain companies that are, when you really look at them and see what they produce, pretty boring, uninspired and a waste of time.

But more billionaires will be minted – and I suppose that’s ‘End Game’.

TOP 3 on American Idol?  Seriously?

Whenever she sings it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.  About a 1/4 tone under the note with no life to her voice at all.  That blank stare without emotion, the inability to move in a natural way.

Is she related to a producer on the show or something?

Is she the Goddaughter of Jimmy Iovine?

I think we need Dan Lyons (the guy who exposed the Facebook smear campaign against Google) to do a full investigation into the popularity of Haley.  Because something is not right here.

Based on Jennifer Lopez’s reaction last night, she also knows that something is rotten in state of Hollywood.

What am I missing?

People, please help me understand why America is brainwashed to think Haley is talented enough to win this competition.

James Durbin has probably the best and most natural voice this show has seen in years.  He has a four octave range.  Scotty has a four note range.  James could scream all day and never lose his voice – Haley has been hoarse all year.

Please, help me understand?

Simon Cowell (with impeccable timing as always) announced today at the Television Critics Association winter press tour he has decided to leave American Idol to become creator/producer/judge of the American version of his hit UK talent show The X Factor.  That show will launch in 2011 on Fox.

Simon has realized (along with the rest of the country) that American Idol has become irrelevant and knew it was time to move on.

A word of advice to Simon Fuller and the producers of American Idol… make this season your last.  Don’t attempt some lame version of A.I. without Simon Cowell.  It won’t work and people won’t watch.

How to build a successful startup:  Step #1 – Use Barry Diller’s money to fund a vanity production label with a friend from high school.

Yes, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett (in particular) are talented guys but anyone who thinks they will spend any real time on this venture is out of their minds.

Sure, we’ll get the standard Will Ferrell-type Funny of Die videos of Bateman and Arnett walking around with a steady-cam eating Doritos and improvising about how easy this internet stuff is – but will anything of value come out of DumbDumb?

Ben Silverman knows the answer to this and laughs at how DumbDumb some people must be.

But for now… it’s all just so exciting.  I know I’m just a cockeyed optimist, but I just can’t wait for Ben to change the world again.  And I’m super glad that they took the time out of the arduous process of building the successful DumbDumb business model to appear in Las Vegas for the announcement (along with the awesomely hilarious Notional CEO Lord Ricky Van Veen).

I just hope it’s not the same business model that Ben Silverman developed for ElectusSpend $100 million on the development (but not the execution) of digital content and when that money is gone – launch another start-up with another sugar daddy.

Dear Tiger Woods, Please Keep Lying

Ari Emanuel, Barbro Holmgren, Ben Silverman, Bonnie and Clyde, David Letterman, Defamer, Drew Rosenhaus, Elin Nordegren, Jay Leno, Jeff Weiner, Jeff Zucker, Jesper Parnevik, Jill Kennedy, Jon and Kate Gosselin, Josefin Nordegren, Khan Manka, Kobe Bryant, Manka Bros., Michael Jackson, Nikki Finke, OnMedea, Oprah, Perez Hilton, Radar Online, Sharon Waxman, Terrell Owens, Terry Semel, thewrap.com, TMZ, WindermereOnline celebrity gossip blogs need you to keep evading authorities and issuing bizarre statements on your website.  It’s the only way many of them will be able to survive the current advertising slowdown.

For a while, the crazy death of Michael Jackson and the pending divorce of Jon & Kate sustained TMZ, Defamer, Radar, etc., but now, they really needed something to jack up the Holiday season – and your insane Thanksgiving was the perfect (the absolute perfect) present under the tree.

What you need to do now, Tiger, is barricade yourself inside your home or come out naked and drunk like something on “Cops” (throw in a scream at the helicopters for that extra zing).  Maybe you and Kobe could get together and go on some sort of cross-country crime spree ala “Bonnie and Clyde”.

I don’t really care what you decide to do next – but PLEASE DO NOT TELL THE TRUTH.  That would kill this story faster than David Letterman confessing his illicit affair on national television.

Ari Emanuel, Barbro Holmgren, Ben Silverman, Bonnie and Clyde, David Letterman, Defamer, Drew Rosenhaus, Elin Nordegren, Jay Leno, Jeff Weiner, Jeff Zucker, Jesper Parnevik, Jill Kennedy, Jon and Kate Gosselin, Josefin Nordegren, Khan Manka, Kobe Bryant, Manka Bros., Michael Jackson, Nikki Finke, OnMedea, Oprah, Perez Hilton, Radar Online, Sharon Waxman, Terrell Owens, Terry Semel, thewrap.com, TMZ, WindermereSo, Tiger…

DON’T come to California and host your golf tournament (keep everyone wondering where you are);

DON’T give a press conference to clear everything up (unless you decide to make it a crazy one with someone like Drew Rosenhaus as your spokesperson);

DO go on Oprah and Jay Leno once your wounds have healed for a nice, safe interview that you have full control over (and stick to your story of Elin freeing you with a golf club from your wrecked Escalade);

DO give Elin a flawless 20-carat diamond during “The View” and “thank her for saving your life”…

Etc. etc. etc.

Just don’t tell the truth.  That would ruin everything.

Ben Silverman – Master Innovator?

I was at a party once and (G. Gordon) Liddy put his hand over a candle, and he kept it there.  He kept it right in the flame until his flesh was burned.  Somebody said, “What’s the trick?”  And Liddy said, “The trick is not minding.”

Deep Throat – All The President’s Men

$100 million start up fund, All the President's Men, Alpo, Barry Diller, Ben Silverman, Charlie McCarthy, Coca-cola, Ed McMahon, Edgar Bergen, Ernest Hemingway, Ex-lax, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Trucks, G. Gordon Liddy, Gatorade, George Cloney, IAC, Jeff Zucker, Jill Kennedy, Khan Manka, Manka Bros., media analyst, NBC Universal, On Medea, OnMedea, Ryan Seacrest, Starbucks, The Biggest Loser, The Restaurant, The Tonight Show, twitter, William FaulknerI’m not suggesting by the title of this entry and the above quote that Ben Silverman is as nuts as G. Gordon Liddy.  Far from it.  I personally believe he is too big of a pussy to even come close to burning his hand in a flame.   But there is a certain recklessness (and his bizarre relishing in this recklessness) that makes the comparison apt.  It’s almost like he wants you to call him a “hard-partying, womanizing, break the rules kind of guy.”  That’s his badge of honor.  And it works for most rock stars and even George Clooney – but not Ben.

I know for a fact that a few drugs and a good amount of booze has helped to shape some of the greatest content ever produced.  Can you imagine jazz evolving as it did without the use of drugs?  Can you imagine Hemingway or Faulkner or Fitzgerald writing sober?  Can you imagine the filmmaking of 1970s without any chemicals to get through the long nights?  Luckily we don’t have to.

There have been many successful executives in the past (and some currently) that have partied just as hard – but you don’t hear much about their social lives because they do their jobs and hit their numbers.  When you fail, everyone starts looking very closely at how you spend your day.

Success would have saved Mr. Silverman and he would have been allowed to do whatever he wanted.  (And Jeff Zucker probably would have encouraged him to continue to do whatever it was he was doing.)  But he failed.

Ben Silverman was an absolute disaster at NBC.  Practically everything he touched turned to shit (the list of expensive flops is long and you most likely have read about them elsewhere) – and yet, here he is, partying his way to the top of another company.

$100 million start up fund, All the President's Men, Alpo, Barry Diller, Ben Silverman, Charlie McCarthy, Coca-cola, Ed McMahon, Edgar Bergen, Ernest Hemingway, Ex-lax, F. Gordon Liddy, Gatorade, George Cloney, IAC, Jeff Zucker, Jill Kennedy, Khan Manka, Manka Bros., media analyst, NBC Universal, On Medea, OnMedea, Ryan Seacrest, Starbucks, The Biggest Loser, The Restaurant, The Tonight Show, twitter, William FaulknerIn my opinion, Barry Diller has done his shareholders a great disservice by letting this failure control a $100 million fund to bridge “the gap between traditional television and the internet”.

Sounds like an amazing idea, Barry!  Somebody has got to figure out that puzzle, I suppose.  And based on all the executive talent out there, you picked… Ben Silverman.

But, stupid me, I keep forgetting, based on press releases, Ben Silverman is a great innovator and the absolute right man to bridge that ‘gap’ (right man, that is, if advertisers are ready to party like animals, miss meetings, sleep late and never see a project through to the end).

But let me give credit where credit is due.  Mr. Silverman is a guy who seamlessly integrated advertiser’s products into storylines of reality and scripted shows such as The Restaurant and The Biggest Loser.  Wow, was that restaurant cooking with ACTUAL FOOD?  Was that biggest loser drinking a Gatorade?  I’m glad Mr. Silverman came up with the idea to let the biggest losers hydrate themselves.  That’s a stroke of genius.  The contestants should be very glad he didn’t cut the deal with Starbucks – the biggest losers would have then had to hydrate with Venti Lattes.)

Note to BenEd McMahon sat next to a dog eating Alpo on The Tonight Show and it sold a lot of AlpoCharlie McCarthy (Edgar Bergen’s ventriloquist puppet) sold a ton of Ex-lax on the radio and he’s a freakin’ puppet that can’t possibly know what it’s like to be constipated!  Products sell because people want the products – not because a Ford Truck was seamlessly integrated into a webisode about a cop and a hooker.

There have been great innovations in advertising (the banner ads on the right side of this blog for one) – but Ben Silverman hasn’t come up with one (no matter how hard he tries to say that he has).  Mr. Silverman has obviously gotten very lucky in life and now has $100 million to play with, which will buy a lot of entertainment for himself and his daily girlfriends as he listens to pitches for web series about hot tits and Vegas fraternities.  I wish him all the best trying to sell those to Coke.

Here’s a prediction that will beat any tweet that Ryan Seacrest will make today:

The venture will fail – without fail.  Sorry, Barry.
